If you fancy a splash of colour to decorate your home or jazz up your patio, garden shed or greenhouse for Autumn and Halloween then my Pumpkin Time Garland is perfect. The pumpkin motifs can be used individually for other projects such as coasters for drinks or appliqué on a bag if you don't wish to make a garland.
This pattern is an oldie but a goodie and comes out every year because the garland is so popular and versatile.
You will need:
Stylecraft Special Aran yarn - Spice and Meadow, 4.50mm hook.
The pattern will work just as well with Double Knit yarn but remember you'll need to use the recommended size of hook. I like to use 3.5mm with DK yarn.
UK Crochet Terms used in this pattern:
Ch = Chain
DC = Double Crochet Tr = Treble
SS = Slip Stitch
To Make:
Foundation:
Ch4, join with SS into first chain to form ring (or use the magic ring method if you prefer).
Round 1:
Ch3 (this counts as first Tr), Tr11 into ring, SS into third chain at the start of round = 12 Tr's.
Round 2.
SS into the first space closest to hook. Ch3 (this counts as first Tr) 1Tr into same space, Tr2 into each of the following spaces, SS into third chain at the start of round to join = 24 Tr's.
Round 3:
SS into the first space closest to hook. Ch3 (this counts as first Tr), Tr1 into same space, *Tr1 into next space, Tr2 into next space* and repeat * to * to last space, Tr1, SS into third chain at the start of round to join = 36 Tr's.
Round4:
SS into the first space closest to hook. Ch2, DC into each of next two spaces, *Tr2 into next space, Tr1 into each of next 2 spaces* and repeat * to * 3 times more, Tr2 into next space, DC1 into next 5 spaces, repeat * to * 4 times, Tr2 into next space, DC1 into next 2 spaces, SS into second chain at the start of round to join.
Round 5:
SS into the first space closest to hook. Ch2, DC1 into next 3 spaces, *Tr2 into next space, Tr1 into next space* and repeat * to * 6 times more, DC1 into next 9 spaces, work *to * 7 times more, DC1 into next 5 spaces, SS into second chain at the start of round to join. Tie off yarn.
Stalk:
Join green yarn between third and fourth DC’s of Round 5 to begin stalk.
Ch9, Tr1 into 4th chain from hook, Tr1 into each of next 5 chain stitches, SS into a space between fifth and sixth DC’s of Round 5 to attach and tie off yarn.
There are a few uses for this Pumpkin motif.
Garland: Crochet sections of chain, joining the pumpkins with a SS into the top of the pumpkin at the base of the stalk as you go. (Work the SS into the pumpkin from the back by bending the stalk forward). Attaching at the base of the stalk means the stalk won’t begin to stretch out of shape.
Alternatively, crochet a long chain to the desired length of your garland. Thread this through the space at the base of the stalk of each pumpkin. The long crochet chain can be replaced with a length of ribbon if preferred. This method allows you to re- arrange the spacing between pumpkins as needed.
Coasters/Mug Mats: Use them as they are or back them with felt of fabric for added thickness.
Vertical Garland: Join them in a vertical line by crocheting a length of chain between each pumpkin motif, joining each section of chain at the top of the stalk and the base of each pumpkin. Alternate each pumpkin motif with dried seed heads, twigs, glass and wooden beads threaded or fastened onto the length of crochet chain.
If you like the idea but don't crochet you could replace the crocheted pumpkins with cutouts from card stock or patterned paper and attach to a length of ribbon.
Whatever you make I wish you lots of creative magic and enjoyment.
Love, Karen x
